How to Stop Insanity

19 April 2010

Albert Einstein, a great Physicist and Philosopher, once said, "Insanity is doing the same thing over the over again and expecting different results."

So, why keep doing it?! This applies to people from all walks of life, but right here, right now, I'm talking about business owners, entrepreneurs, individuals, companies, law firms, doctors, accountants, and the list goes on!

You and I both know what is involved with running and maintaining an office, staff and overheads, and the costs involved. How many people have to take stress leave because they and their bosses don't how how to stick to their job descriptions? They run into work overload, role confusion and downright frustration.

You keep doing the same thing over and over again expecting to have a different outcome each time. Instead, what appears to be satisfactory, is really, "just made it by the skin of our teeth." You're stressed; your staff is stressed, underpaid and undervalued. Yes, we can see everyone pulling their hair out or trying to!

  • Be still. Give thought and consideration to what is going on in and around you. Go to your 'quiet place' and contemplate where you are at and what is going on.

  • Acknowledge that what you have been doing is not working; it is not productive for you or those around you. You have identified the problem when you are able to do that.

  • Decide, "I am going to take a chance and do something different, just one small step to make a change. I am not going to keep going around in circles." Otherwise known as 'nowhere'.

  • If you are an employee, fire your boss or leave if you feel you need to. Work at home like the rest of the planet. Be your own boss and take control of your life.

  • If you are the boss, then stop pulling your hair out and learn to delegate. Don't be a hero and don't think you're the only one that's talented! Delegate responsiblities to those that are equipped to carry them out.

  • Clarify your job description, your role and everyone else's; avoid confusion at all costs. Don't be superman or superwoman because there's no such thing! Work as a team.

  • If you are in a workplace environment, make that environment what you want it to be. What you sow into your environment is what you will reap from it.

Finally, think positive. Go to your 'quiet place' on a regular basis, not just when you're about to lose it, but regularly. Imagine and visualize a place of tranquility for you, a place that you dream of going. Walk there if possible for the exercise!
