DO IT!

You have an Umbilical Hernia (Part 2)

You have an Umbilical Hernia

I knew it was there but I had put on so much weight, I thought it was because of that. It was a very large protrusion and I was so embarrassed to go out in public, and I always covered it with baggy clothes etc. I could not wear tee-shirts or long pants unless they were too big. I could not reach over my sink bench to the cupboard, I could not stand for long in any place, I could not bend over and reach my toes, so many things I was physically incapacitated, to do. It got bigger and it got worse.

I was so ashamed of it, not even family or friends knew. I kept it well hidden. I started to get sharp little pains and that scared me so I told my acupuncturist and showed her. She said, “Lenna, go to your doctor.”

I did and was told I had umbilical hernia. Largely due to the massive weight gain, heavy lifting and straining… basically not taking care of myself while in that ‘dark place’, but then who does when they are there?

To cut a very long story short it got so bad over the next two years I presented five times to the Accident and Emergency department. I was shown how to ‘put it back in’, but it came out every time I stood up. I was becoming unbearable. The fifth time I presented myself and got sent home I went to my doctor at my wit’s end and in distress. I had previously been put on wait list and consideration for surgical consult, though ‘not urgent’. It was a kind doctor at the hospital that said to me, “Love, if you want to get to a surgeon, keep presenting yourself here and you will get in”.

He said, “That does it, you’re going to the hospital now, today!” He rang and said, “I want this lady seen now, she’s on her way up.” I’m sure he said more, but yes, I did see a surgical registrar promptly and before much longer I was in seeing a first-class surgeon! He was so cool, so chilled and laid back. I was so scared and he got me to stand up, took a look at the hernia, pressed a few times, and sat me down.

He said, “No worries, we can remove that.” No worries! The calming tone and absolute belief in his voice and his work, assured me that he knew what he was talking about, and would take good care of me. He told me straight the pros and cons and let me know exactly what I was up for. But that he believed it would not be a problem to do it.

He told me, “If you are walking level one and two at Virginia Lake, I want you to walk level three every day, and at a faster pace!” Crikey! But I listened because I believed him, and I did it! It was murder at first but got easier and helped me greatly in prep for my surgery.
The time for my surgery came, March of last year 2015, I went in to have my surgery. It was a success and I healed very quickly, followed the advice given, and did as I was told.

Then came the next big thing toward my healing journey. GYM. continue reading
